Depression Treatment:
5 Quick and Easy Ways for Natural Depression Relief! by T. J. Harris
1) Exercise-
I’ve done this for years. Exercise is a marvelous Remedy for Depression. No one seems to know for sure how, or why, this works, but it does. Aerobic Exercise (where the heart rate stays elevated for at least 25 minutes) works best. Walk, Swim, Bike, Run, Play Tennis, or even Dance at least 3 days a week.
2) Diet-
The foods we eat greatly influence the biochemical behavior of the brain. Depression can start with an imbalance in the brain area responsible for moods.
Eating too much saturated fat leads to fatigue, and sluggishness. Complex carbohydrates have a calming effect. Protein promotes alertness. A healthy balance is the goal. Help Depression by Diet. Eat more turkey and salmon, which are high in tryptophan and protein, while low in fat. Balance this with raw vegetables for more complex carbohydrates. Caution: sugar will give a quick energy burst followed by a crash, which can leave you feeling depressed.
3) Sunlight-
Those of us who live in the Northeastern, or upper Midwest United States know that winter gets dark and dreary. Sun and bright light stimulate the production of melatonin, which is a brain chemical that prevents Depression. Turn on the bright lights to avoid “the blues.”
Full Spectrum lights are now available for use in Depression Light Therapy when natural sunlight is not abundant. Studies have shown that 2 hours of morning sun is an effective Depression relief, while evening light has less benefit.
4) Music-
My all-time favorite Depression Relief Music is Country Western. Not this newer, upbeat Country/Rock crossover stuff. But, the good old-fashioned, super-sad, extra sorry songs by artists like Hank Williams or George Jones. I know this sounds counter-intuitive. But, when I’m really down, I listen to these sad songs. At first I relate to the song until I can’t hold back the tears, then suddenly I burst out laughing. My own problems suddenly seem trivial in comparison, and I feel uplifted. This works for me. Experiment with different music, and see what works for you.
5) Water-
Get in it, and splash around if you can. Something about the movement of water over the human body is fabulously soothing, healing, and refreshing. Throughout History the priests and shamans in many cultures have used water in ceremony and ritual transitions. It is no coincidence that Christians baptize with water. Try Water Therapy for Depression. Go for a Swim, take a bath, or shower. If you can’t get in, go look at it. Walk on the beach. Or, go down to the river, and watch it flow.
